Wikipedia to open India office soon
Wikipedia, the world's free online encyclopedia, will shortly be launching an India office -- probably in Mumbai -- besides setting up an India Chapter of the Wiki Foundation, the owners of Wikipedia and its other arms, in Bangalore said.
Wikipedia is one of most visited sites after Google with about 375 million visitors a month.
"We will be launching the Wiki Foundation's India Chapter in Bangalore shortly and an India office of Wikipedia by early 2011," Wikimedia Foundation chief global development officer Barry Newstead told in an interaction Saturday.

Cornell University Assistant Professor of Computer Science Ashutosh Saxena and his colleagues are working at Cornell's Personal Robotics Lab, which develops software for complex, high-level robotics.
Among the lab's goals are programming robots that can clean up a dishevelled room, assemble an Ikea bookshelf and load and unload a dishwasher - all without human intervention.
"Just like people buy a car, I envision that in five to 10 years, people will buy an assistive robot that will be cheaper or about the same cost as a car," Saxena said.
“Picking up a pen is one thing. It's quite another to make a robot understand how to pick up an object it's never encountered or navigate a room it's never seen.”
Saxena has researched how to make robots perceive information in cluttered and unknown environments. His work also has enabled robots to estimate depth from a single image.
Using a camera, one robot evaluates an object - say, a cup or plate - and figures out how best to grab it. This technology will eventually integrate into the full-fledged dishwasher-loading robot.

Asus' latest Netbook packs in higher tech
Tablets are getting a lot of attention these days as the next big thing in portable computing. That may well be the case, but enticing new Netbooks and Netbook/tablet hybrids are emerging, giving this mobile category a new luster, as as I wrote recently.
One of the most remarkable Netbook designs is the Asus Eee PC 1015PEM. From a pure, on-paper standpoint, this clusters key cutting-edge tech that few laptops--or tablets for that matter--can match.
USB 3.0: There are only a handful of laptops (typically priced above $1,000) on the market from top-tier vendors with USB 3.0 ports. Now we have an inexpensive Netbook offered in some configurations with this connection technology, which delivers up to 10 times the data transfer speeds of the USB 2.0 ports used in virtually all laptops today.
Bluetooth 3.0: This is another new connection technology boasting much greater data throughput and not seen on a lot of mobile devices today.
Intel dual-core Atom processor: This is Intel's first dual-core chip for Netbooks., delivering the multitasking goodness of multicore processors. The beauty of this chip is its high level of integration: Intel has already manufactured a chip that Advanced Micro Devices has been talking about for years (but has yet to make). That is, a single piece of silicon that fuses the dual-core CPU (main processor) with GPU (graphics chip). And the extra oomph from the second CPU processor doesn't affect battery life materially. In fact, Asus is claiming 13 hours on one charge. Likely overstated but if actual battery life is two-thirds of what Asus claims, this is still way ahead of most laptops.
All of this points to an interesting trend that may develop over the next 12 months or so. To date, larger laptops have been the bastion of the latest and greatest mobile PC technology. Some of this may begin to shift, however, to Netbooks as they come to represent one of the most viable alternatives to tablets.
